It's not every day you scare your administration.

In the current economic downturn, many students are becoming prudent with their money.   Common sense tells them to raise a wary eyebrow to any suggestions that misuse current funds or will take more money out of students’ pockets.   Crazy schemes from the college administration come in all shapes and sizes, but when money is involved, students will usually pay attention.

At the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, the Editor in Chief of the Conservative Hawk, Kevin King, noticed suspicious activity within the school's budget committee.  During a state-wide budget freeze, King realized that an entire department within the university received raisies.

Concerned about this (potentially illegal!) fiscal irresponsibility, he sprang into action.

Bob Russell, Director of Budgets in the Business Affairs department, stated in an e-mail to King that it was "perfectly legal" for certain employees to receive a salary increase.  However, just four hours earlier, Russell told King that "there [were] no salary raises for state employees for FY 09-10 or FY 10-11, according to [North Carolina] Senate Bill 202.”Kevin King saw the contradiction and published his findings in an article for his paper.  The staff of the Conservative Hawk was then invited onto local radio, The Big Talker radio show, to explain the findings to Wilmington residents.  Taxpayers would never have been the wiser if the Conservative Hawk was not established on campus to expose the agenda to misuse taxpayer funds.

The University wasn't happy and a representative of the Chancellor called in to debate the students.

Are you a leader like these students?  Follow in their footsteps and join Campus Reform to become the next conservative activist taking a noteworthy stand for freedom.

  • Campus Reform can help students start their own conservative group to fight things just like this on their campuses.
  • Campus Reform also provides a Campus Election Workshop for conservatives who want to take back their campus and fight for the students, not for the agenda of the administration.
  • Conservative and libertarian students who want to expose leftist abuses in written form can take a Student Publication Workshop and learn how to start their own conservative newspaper.

Take advantage of these many resources to fight back on your campus!
