While our Congress is currently debating the ins-and-outs of health care "reform," many public universities are requiring their student bodies to enroll in some form of health insurance. UNC-Wilmington has become the most recent university to require such a mandate. Their message to the student body is: Enroll in health insurance or find another college.
According to UNC-W’s student health services website:
Beginning in Fall 2010, health insurance will be required for all UNCW students. This may be insurance the students bring with them (family, employer, etc), insurance they purchase through the school, or a combination of both plans.
Who made this decision? According to an e-mail response sent to Katrin Wesner, the UNCW student health services point of contact for this new insurance mandate,
The decision to require all UNC students to have health insurance beginning in Fall 2010 was made at the system level by the Board of Governors – so the same requirement will apply to all 16 UNC system schools.
